The starting point of our work on this project is the search for a possible principle for the necessary constant development and renewal on an urban scale including across detailed property borders. As a continuation of LaSie (long-term settlement development) in Munich, the design is dedicated to the conversion of industrial wasteland into a housing scheme, and proposes a structure that develops from the perimeter towards the centre of the area and offers an interconnected series of exciting spaces as the starting point of communal life. This communal space goes beyond the tradition of the private backyard and offers structural points of contact for the successive development of the whole block as a modern world of living and working.

On the basis of an open, flowing geometry, buildings develop that concentrate on stretching public space into the depths of the area of considerable proportions. As a sign of this layout, high points are arranged in the area of the central square that indicate the preferred status of the public throughway as opposed to the block perimeter. The idea of the commonly used “backyard” is additionally supported by an open usage programme directed at the public above and beyond the development of an exciting and characteristic series of spaces. There should also be room for social institutions of the district and for the provision of everyday consumer goods as well as gastronomy particularly suited to the workers of the area.
Inside the flowing bodies, houses are created with their own identity; these houses are ‘pushed’ against each other as ‘particles’, after which they generate through their tectonics and façades a soft cohesion between the individual houses. The resulting floor plans also deal with the relationship between private living space and participation in communal life. In the most varied dwelling types from townhouse to classical apartment to maisonette types, the room for manoeuvre resulting from the different building depths serves as a starting point for exciting and different lifestyles. The need for communal green spaces is satisfied by extensive grassed roof terraces used by the housing community.
